Johannesburg - Chinese electronics company Huawei is pinning its hopes on open source ecosystems to contribute to the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) in South Africa.
The company revealed its strategy at the MTN IoT conference, taking place in Sandton Johannesburg this week.
Huawei wants to empower users to experience a more connected world through the internet, using a series of connect devices ranging from smart plugs to smart lighting. At the same time the Chinese company also seeks to allow third-party developers and other manufacturers to connect Huawei devices through their open source ecosystems.
IoT is the networking of physical smart devices which also include vehicles, buildings, and other items that feature embedded electronics, software and sensors, which enable smart objects to collect and exchange data.
On Thursday Zhu Ming, Huawei’s IoT regional director, told Fin24 at the conference that the company wants to provide technology to power IoT in smart homes, utilities and the vehicle industry. Huawei is already working with Volkswagen in China and BMW in Germany to provide chips for vehicles.
“In South Africa, IoT is still in its early stages of development, but already we are seeing significant demand for solutions in various industries, like utilities, insurance and manufacturing,” Ming said.

Ming also delivered a keynote address focused on building a profitable IoT ecosystem at the MTN IoT Conference.
“MTN is an important strategic partner for Huawei and we both share a common vision of growing South Africa’s IoT sector, so it is a great opportunity for us to be participating in this event and celebrating IoT entrepreneurs,” he added.
Ming told Fin24 that conferences such as the current event are important for the development of the IoT industry. “There is a lot of young talent in the IoT industry and conferences such as these help develop and nurture growth in the IoT space.”
MTN Business kicked off the second IoT Conference with over 400 attendees, with the aim of showcasing the latest trends and opportunities in the IoT industry.
