Cape Town - The OneRandMan is evoking a reaction for everyone who follows his story (see our latest story).
Some comments are quite harsh, while others are supportive.
The OneRandMan, an architect in Cape Town who decided to get his salary paid to him in R1 coins just for the month of July (National Savings Month), is paying all his accounts and day-to-day shopping using only R1 coins to visually see where his money is actually going each month.

Doug Beadle writes about his experience "a few decades ago", using cash only to determine where his money was going:
A few decades ago, when our (my wife and I) income wasn't meeting expenditure, I started dealing only with cash, not to the extreme of the OneRandMan. I separated each amount owed and money needed to pay for food and utilities into envelopes and managed our income with discipline.
This really worked well and made us realise the debt trap of the credit card when used indiscriminately. This method helped us through those times and taught us a valuable lesson in developing a culture of savings, for which I am grateful indeed.
Donald Khoza says he sacrificed a lot to save and can see the results now:
I have been working since I was 21 and now I can see what I have achieved. I tried not to party too much, as the future was looking very hard for me. I sacrificed a lot, but today I can be grateful that I could focus, even though I never stopped spending cash.
