Johannesburg - The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) agreed to an urgent meeting on Friday with the labour department and platinum mining firms to end a pay strike, the labour ministry said.
It was earlier reported that the planned meeting would take place at a later date because Amcu had to confirm a date.
"The meeting is back on for tomorrow [Friday] at 09:00 at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration offices in Johannesburg," Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant's spokesperson Musa Zondi said on Thursday.
Members of Amcu went on strike at Lonmin [JSE:LON], Anglo Platinum (Amplats) [JSE:AMS] and Impala Platinum (Implats) [JSE:IMP] mines.
They were pushing for an entry-level monthly salary of R12 500.
In a joint statement on Thursday, the platinum companies welcomed the government's offer to mediate in the ongoing dispute with Amcu.
Amplats CEO Chris Griffith, Implats CEO Terence Goodlace and Lonmin CEO Ben Magara reiterated that a prolonged strike would probably further damage South Africa's reputation as an attractive business and investment destination.
