Cape Town – The finance ministry has asked the public to be on the lookout for people who attempt to con them out of money, both in South Africa and abroad.
The ministry has issued a warning about a number of Facebook accounts which purport to be those of the minister of finance.
It said in a statement that these fake accounts are the latest attempt to rip off the public.
The ministry warned the public last year about bogus letters or emails which purportedly came from the minister's office and those of other senior public officials.
The ministry condemned the use of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s name and photograph, and reiterated that such scams can only succeed because some members of the public have an unquenchable thirst for easy wealth.
