It sounds like a scene straight out of a romantic movie. A woman does her grocery shopping unaware of the surprise awaiting her. As she wanders through the aisles, a familiar voice crackles over the intercom, calling her to aisle six. There she finds her boyfriend on bended knee, ring in hand, surrounded by cheering onlookers ululating from every corner.

But this is no make-believe story.

This is the real life romance of Zelda Botha (28) and her besotted new fiancé, Albertus Geyser (43).

He filmed his recent proposal to Zelda – and the video has now gone viral.

Albertus, a software engineer from Standerton in Mpumalanga, first crossed paths with Zelda on social media in October 2022. Zelda owns a catering company and was living in Cape Town at the time.

"We spoke on WhatsApp for three months, endless video calls and everything, and then he decided to drive to Cape Town to visit me," she recalls.

The chemistry was undeniably there but Zelda, an extroverted social media enthusiast, couldn’t understand why he rarely posted about their relationship online.

"I'm not much into the social media stuff," Albertus explains. "But then she complained. She said, 'Are you shy of me because you never put me as a WhatsApp status and you never post something about me and us on Facebook'."

After two years of dating, he decided to show her just how proud he was of their love by proposing in their local Pick n Pay supermarket on the busiest day of the month.

"I didn't know about the KFC proposal or the other Pick n Pay proposals. I just thought this would be a brilliant idea to show her that I'm not shy," Albertus says.

The lovebirds plan to tie the knot in December.

"It's just a small, casual affair. We're going to get married at church and then have a garden party," Zelda says.
