The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) says there is "a substantial risk of a disputed electoral outcome" in the upcoming election if Jacob Zuma is allowed to stand – and has urged the Constitutional Court to urgently rule on his eligibility.
"The decision of this court is required urgently in the interests of justice. An election is about to take place," the IEC stated in heads of argument filed at the Constitutional Court on Monday.
"There is a substantial risk of a disputed electoral outcome if Mr Zuma is allowed to stand, despite his disqualification, which would erode the foundations of our constitutional order and the rule of law. The interests of justice unquestionably demand of this court to decide this matter now, not after the elections."
