In some countries, enduring power of attorney will take effect when a person becomes impaired. This does not apply in South African law, which has real consequences for the finances of people with dementia, writes Bruce Cameron.
Many non-communicable terminal diseases (NCDs), which mostly affect the elderly, are unfortunately a fact of life.
The diseases are, however, bedevilled by financial issues. People cannot afford the costs or struggle to put in place structures that will continue to care for those affected, or their dependants, after their death.
