Once an integral part of the South African Navy’s defences during World War 2, the SAS Somerset now lies in ruins in a Waterfront dry dock.

The bar-class boom defence vessel was one of several ships used to set underwater and surface-level defences to protect harbours from submarine attacks during World War 2.

Commander Leon Steyn, the officer-in-charge at the South African Naval Museum, shared a brief history of the SAS Somerset with News24.
