The First Rand Group has contributed R500 000 to a fund set up to help journalists financially affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The South African National Editors’ Forum launched the relief fund for journalists who have lost their livelihoods as a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic in July.
First Rand's donation is made up of contributions from FirstRand and its operating businesses: First National Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, WesBank and Ashburton Investments. MTN SA has also contributed R500 000 to the initiative.
The financial services provider said in a statement that the media has played a vital role in ensuring that the nation is kept abreast of key developments during the pandemic.
"The job losses in the industry are unprecedented and we are losing journalists at a time we need them the most. South Africans have turned to trusted news sources in the face of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. The contribution will go a long way in cushioning the blow," said SANEF chairperson, Mahlatse Mahlase.
