The future of the world's heritage sites is anything but assured, given climate change, the effects of war and urban development. In South Africa, many sites have been plagued by mismanagement and infrastructure collapse, writes Caroline Halton. 

In 2019, Ghana ran a campaign called "Year of Return" - commemorating the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the United States. Its purpose was to promote tourism and investment, but also to encourage descendants of these populations to reconnect with the land of their ancestors.

Key attractions for visitors were the country's forts and castles – controversial but significant symbols of the African Diaspora.
