Civil society groups have lodged an application to have a court review Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy's decision to uphold the environmental authorisation for the proposed 2 000MW Phakwe gas power plant.

The plant will be located in the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone.

The groups, groundWork and South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), lodged an appeal with the department last year after environmental authorisation was granted in November 2022.
