Nene, Gigaba to testify before SARS inquiry next week

Current and former Finance Ministers Nhlanhla Nene and Malusi Gigaba are expected to appear before the Nugent Commission of Inquiry into administration at the SA Revenue Service next week.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has tasked the commission, which continued with its second round of public hearings this week, with determining the cause of a breakdown in governance at the tax authority.

In a statement issued late on Friday, the commission shared the schedule for the third round of public hearings, set down for August 29 to 31.

Current Finance Minister Nene and his predecessor Gigaba are scheduled to appear on Friday, together with tax expert Judge Dennis Davis.

On Wednesday the National Treasury led by Ismail Momoniat is expected to give evidence.

The remainder of the commission's time is expected to be used for global consultancy Bain & Company, which SARS hired to draw up a remodelling plan for the operations model.

The operations model, instituted under now suspended commissioner Tom Moyane, was slammed during evidence before the commission this week.
