Less electricity produced and distributed in SA y-o-y, says Stats SA

Johannesburg – Electricity generated in South Africa has decreased by 0.5% year-on-year in April 2018, Stats SA announced on Thursday. 

"Seasonally adjusted electricity generation decreased by 1.7% in April 2018 compared with March 2018," Stats SA said.

Electricity distribution decreased by 0.7% on a year-on-year basis in April 2018.

Distribution dropped across provinces in South Africa, with Mpumalanga recording the highest decrease in volume of electricity delivered. In March 2018, electricity delivered to Mpumalanga amounted to 2998 GWh, and in April that decreased to 2740 GWh. 

In total, the volume of electricity delivered across South Africa in April amounted to 18 400 GWh, an increase of 0.2% from the previous month.

"Seasonally adjusted electricity distribution decreased by 0,3% in the three months ended April 2018, compared with the previous three months," Stats SA said.

Eskom managed to generate 75 454 GWh between January and April 2018, a 0.4% increase from the previous year’s 75 119 GWh in the same period.

However, there was a decrease of 2.9% in the inflow of power in South Africa, bringing the total for January to April 2018 to 2843 GWh.
