Eskom clean-up continues, Prish Govender resigns

Cape Town - The clean up at Eskom continued with acting head of group capital Prish Govender tendering his resignation.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe took to twitter to make the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

Govender had been reinstated at the beginning of the year, following an investigation clearing him of any wrongdoing.

Govender had been implicated in the #GuptaLeaks related to the McKinsey-Trillian contract with Eskom. His reinstatement was criticized by Business Leadership South Africa, as flying in the face of the rule of law.

The news came just days after a new board at Eskom was appointed by government, with businessman Jabu Mabuza as chair.

Last week Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba said that a major shake-up was in store at the power utility, as its executives did not take the severity of its financial situation seriously. The minister said that Eskom had the potential to collapse the economy.

Since the new board was appointed, chief financial officer Anoj Singh resigned.

Singh testified at the Eskom Inquiry on Tuesday, during which he spoke on his role at Eskom particularly regarding the McKinsey-Trillian contract, a R2.1bn fine that was squashed for Gupta-linked Tegeta as well as a R1.6bn guarantee awarded to the company. Singh said that he had no personal relationship with the Gupta family, and that they had not funded his trips to Dubai, nor did he go to Dubai to meet them.
