Out of all places he could settle to develop his career, he chose South Africa.

While many may recognise him for his modelling campaigns and his roles on South African TV screens, such as his latest stint on Scandal!, Stevel Marc’s talents extend far beyond the limelight.

He’s also a writer, photographer and MC. With so much going on in his CV, I think it’s safe to say that he has mastered the art of versatility.

With a rich tapestry of nationalities, his 23-year journey in the Rainbow Nation has been nothing short of remarkable.

What began as a quest for better opportunities has evolved into a lifelong love affair with a land that has become his home away from home for more than half of 41 years of life.

As he strolls into the hotel foyer, fresh from a masterclass where he shared his media journey and offered invaluable advice to budding models and designers, Stevel exudes an infectious sense of calm and enthusiasm.

After a little chat, we dive straight into the interview and the first question DRUM asks him is, “Why South Africa?”.

"South Africa started because at the time it was a developing market, so it was the perfect place to come for black models," Stevel recalls. The presence of black-focused magazines such as TRUE LOVE, Pace and DRUM magazine provided a platform for aspiring models like him to flourish.

At the height of his career, Kuli Roberts– who was an It-girl and media personality – ended up being one of his closest friends in SA.

Arriving in South Africa was a pivotal moment for Stevel, fueled by youthful ambition and an unwavering belief in his abilities.

"If I can just get the plane ticket,” he would tell his teenage self. “Once I get there, I know I will work," he recalls.

And work he did, from his first gig in Mzansi at 17 years of age for a prominent Southern African brand billboard to gracing the pages of Pace and TRUE LOVE magazine.

His adaptability and versatility, whether in modeling or acting, make him a sought-after talent.

Although 1 May 2024 marks Stevel’s 23rd year in South Africa, he is set on going back to the States.

As he prepares to bid farewell to South Africa and return to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, a new chapter unfolds. With his sights set on global stardom, he stands poised to conquer new heights and redefine the boundaries of success.

"US is mainly for film. To be a global film star, the US must approve of you," he asserts, speaking on his decision to settle in USA.
