Artist Clementina van der Walt has managed to earn a living as an entrepreneur for more than two decades. She writes:
I HAVE been a practising self-employed ceramist for 24 years.
Through the years I have held numerous group and solo exhibitions and run a production studio. I currently, with my partner Albie Bailey, have a studio and retail outlet in Woodstock, Cape Town.
I have two part-time studio assistants. We produce once-off, high end ceramic items, both functional and decorative, which is sold in galleries in South African and abroad.
My advice for aspiring art entrepreneurs is to have discipline and hard work.
Nothing can replace experience and sometimes things may take many years to be resolved.
One learns all the time, both technically and technologically, design wise, marketing and human relations.
There is so much information available and time is limited, so one has to prioritise and decide on one's “world view” regarding life's values and proceed accordingly.
