Zuma tops SA’s Facebook conversations in 2015

Johannesburg - More South Africans have mentioned President Jacob Zuma in their Facebook posts this year than any other topic.

This is according to Facebook’s ‘Year in Review’ lists which have measured how frequently a topic was mentioned in posts made between January 1 and December 1 2015.

Around 12 million South Africans use Facebook on a monthly basis, the social network revealed in September this year.

And according to a statement from Facebook on Wednesday, President Zuma topped the list of topics mentioned in Facebook posts in South Africa this year.

He was followed by the rugby world cup (2), the Eskom electricity crisis (3), the Mayweather and Pacquiao boxing fight (4), the Nkandla scandal (5), the terror attacks in Paris (6), the US presidential election (7), the cricket world cup (8), comedian Trevor Noah (9) and Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane (10).

Zuma’s ranking as the most talked about topic on Facebook in South Africa comes amid the leader controversially sacking the country’s Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene on Wednesday night and replacing him with largely unknown David van Rooyen.

Meanwhile, Facebook has also revealed other data about its ‘Year in Review’ list which includes the top ten South African places mentioned on the social network.

These were the Kruger National Park (1), Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront (2), Table Mountain (3), Durban’s uShaka Marine World (4), Johannesburg’s Montecasino (5), Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (6), Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope (7), the FNB stadium (8), Durban’s Gateway shopping centre (9) and the Lion Park in Gauteng (10).

Globally, Facebook said that the US presidential election and the November 13 attacks in Paris were the world’s two top trending topics for the year. Other major trending topics included the Syrian civil war and refugee crisis (3), the Nepal earthquakes (4) and the Greek debt crisis (5).
