Johannesburg - Video-sharing website YouTube has announced support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) videos as the latest format available.
The support for HDR videos on the website is a plus for anyone watching YouTube from a newer HDTV.
HDR offers viewers a higher contrast, revealing precise, detailed shadows and highlights with more clarity. The technology is able to make white colours brighter and black darker in contrast.
“Support for wide color gamut means colors are more vibrant. Simply put, HDR unlocks the most spectacular image quality we've ever streamed,” a post by YouTube on their Google Blog read.
User who have supported devices, such as HDR TVs with the Chromecast Ultra and 2016 Samsung SUHD and UHD TVs - as well as TVs like Hisense’s ULED TV – will be able to streaming content from the site in HDR.
Users who do not have HDR-enabled devices will be able to watch content in a standard dynamic range version of the video.
“HDR adds a whole new dimension of creative freedom and visual spectacle, and we've barely scratched the surface of what this means for storytelling. We can't wait to see the amazing videos you're going to make with HDR,” the post by Youtube went further to read.
Most smartphones available on the market today offer a mode for shooting photos and videos in HDR to offer more detailed pictures.
And while smartphones are able to capture content in HDR, very few such as Sony’s Xperia X devices offer users an HDR screen.
