SABC exec: Aguma sick but not out as acting CEO

Cape Town - The SABC currently has a new acting CEO, but this is only while James Aguma is on sick leave.

Communications minister Ayando Dlodlo announced on Wednesday morning to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) that the general executive for technology Tsheliso Ralitabo has been appointed as acting CEO.

Mathatha Tsedu, deputy chairperson of the interim SABC board, later clarified that Ralitabo has only been appointed as acting CEO while Aguma was on sick leave. He remains CFO and acting CEO.

Dlodlo also said the current governance at the public broadcaster couldn't continue. The process to appoint a permanent CEO and CFO was already underway.

Aguma was not present at the meeting. He has been absent due to illness since Monday, the committee heard.

Tsedu said Hlaudi Motsoeneng's lawyers provided a affidavit in which Aguma stated that he gave permission to Motsoeneng to hold his controversial press conference last month, and the board did not decide to institute disciplinary steps against Motsoeneng relating to this.

Tsedu said the board did decide to institute disciplinary steps, which will be heard this Wednesday, and that Aguma was part of that meeting.

DA MP Tim Brauteseth said there should be steps taken against Aguma because of this.
