Qualcomm launches powerful chipset for 2018 smartphones

Johannesburg - Chipset-maker Qualcomm has announced the launch of its new Snapdragon 845 mobile platform, set to power many of the high-end smartphones to be released in 2018.

The new platform was designed to offer immersive multimedia experiences, including eXtended reality (XR), on-device artificial intelligence (AI), faster connectivity, and new secure processing unit (SPU) for better security.

The Snapdragon 845 was also designed for consumers to capture cinema-grade UHD videos and superior photography.

The chipset is Qualcomm’s third-generation AI mobile platform, with 3-times improvement in overall AI performance.

With a vision to provide better security solutions within mobile platforms, the Snapdragon 845 introduces a hardware isolated subsystem with vault-like characteristics to existing layers of Qualcomm mobile security solutions.

The Snapdragon 845 also features wireless technologies to enhance LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth features which allow a 3GB movie to be downloaded in less than 3 minutes.

The platform’s enhancements to Bluetooth 5 will allow users to broadcast audio simultaneously to multiple wireless speakers, smartphones or other devices and are designed to reduce battery consumption of wireless earbuds by up to 50% compared to the previous generation.

Snapdragon chipsets currently power some of the top Android smartphones available on the South African market - including the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and S8 smartphones which feature the Snapdragon 835 chipset.

The Snapdragon 845 is likely expected to power premium flagship devices from Samsung, Nokia and Sony in 2018.
