Cape Town – There’s a new player in the South African subscription video on demand market which has a new take on streaming video.
“We position ourselves as one platform where you can access all content,” Steven Cohen, chief executive of Future TV, told Fin24 about the platform.
The streaming market is a growth area with international players such as Netflix offering content in SA, but Cohen said that Future TV will create a content platform.
“We’ve created channels from video websites. We want to make it easy for the consumers to get content for the television.”
He said that the company was looking to partner with players like Naspers-owned [JSE:NPN] ShowMax to offer content to people through a decoder.
“We want work with ShowMax to get their content on our platform. We want to work with content providers where people can just switch on to our – you don’t need smart TV,” said Cohen.
The platform is live in Johannesburg and Cohen said that it would launch nationwide within three months.
He added that the lowering cost of internet access put streaming within reach of many South Africans.
“In 2015, there’s been extensive growth in internet offerings. It’s not just ADSL anymore. With these services there’s a lot more available to the consumer at reasonable pricing.”
