Johannesburg - Search giant Google’s streaming music service, which has on-demand access to 35 million songs, has been launched in South Africa.
Google Play Music went live in SA on Tuesday at an introductory price of R49.99 per month, until the end of January 2016, for access to local and international artists. Thereafter the service will cost R59.99 per month.
Apart from having access to millions of songs, the service also allows users to store 50 000 tracks from their own personal collection.
The service is available to Android users and on the web at play.google.com.
Meanwhile, Google South Africa says it’s also worked with with local licensing organisations the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO) and the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) to “ensure all artists are fairly compensated for work featured in the Play Music store”.
The launch of Google Play Music in SA follows that of Apple Music launching into the local market in June this year.
