Johannesburg - A ceramic pot set listed on e-commerce website Takealot.com at just R399 for Black Friday's ‘Blue Dot Sale’ - 93% off its regular price of R5 909 - was unfortunately too good to be true.

A Fin24 reader tried to purchase the Swiss-made Royalty Line 21-Piece Limited Edition Ceramic Coating Cookware Set in Copper for its advertised price on Friday.

But at checkout, the price was given as R1 999, not R399.

Julie-Anne Walsh, chief marketing officer at Takealot said that an inadvertent human error caused the incorrect price to be displayed on the product page.

“This error was completely independent of the technical issues Takealot.com experienced across Black Friday weekend. As soon as we became aware of this pricing error, the deal price was immediately corrected and we started to contact all customers who had already placed an order at the incorrect price - cancelling their orders and crediting their account in full for all payments received,” Walsh said.

“To apologise to all customers who were left disappointed, we're also giving all affected customers R250 store credit to use the next time they shop with Takealot," she added.

"We apologise for any disappointment caused and can assure all Takealot customers that we've taken every step possible to try and prevent something like this from happening again in future, including more stringent checks and balances on deal price inputs and significant discounts."

Takealot told Fin24 the pot set was being sold by one of its third-party Marketplace Sellers, Precision Cooking.

Despite downtime on Friday as tens of thousands of South Africans logged onto the website to snap up discounted deals, Takealot.com still netted R87m from a record 2.2 million visits on Black Friday.

Although the site and app operated at 100% capacity from late on Friday, Takealot said in a statement that it had proven to be one of the most challenging days in the company’s six-year history.
