Thousands of Pretoria homes to get fibre broadband

Johannesburg - Telkom’s newly spun-off broadband wholesale division Openserve plans to connect more than 10 000 Pretoria homes to fibre technology.

Earlier this month, Telkom launched Openserve as part of a move to separate its wholesale and retail divisions.

Openserve supplies wholesale fibre broadband access as well as other offerings such as  metro ethernet.

“Openserve, the wholesale division of Telkom, today announced that more than 10 000 Pretoria East homes, including Faerie Glen and Garsfontein, will have access to fibre technology by end December 2015, making this area the latest in the company’s fibre rollout strategy,” said Openserve in a statement.

Openserve’s planned fibre installations in Pretoria East come after Telkom earlier this year announced a fibre roll-out in the whole of Bryanston in addition to other suburbs in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Port Elizabeth.

Telkom ultimately plans for one million homes to have access to its fibre network by 2018.

The company’s push to expand its fibre network, though, comes amid growing competition in the space.

On the day that Openserve launched on October 13, independent fibre provider Vumatel announced that it has a new investor in the form of banking firm Investec.

Vumatel is planning to connect up to 100 000 homes to fibre broadband by 2016 after it first connected upmarket Johannesburg suburb Parkhurst in 2014.

Other players such as Fibrehoods and even MTN are also installing fibre-to-the-home in parts of Johannesburg.
