Telkom CEO denies car fraud allegations

Johannesburg - The chief executive officer of Telkom [JSE:TKG], Sipho Maseko, has denied allegations levelled against him regarding car fraud.

Reports emerged on Friday that Maseko appeared in Johannesburg’s Wynberg Magistrate's Court to face charges of cloning car licence plates to avoid traffic fines.

Another driver, who bought a car previously owned by Maseko, is said to have received R30 000 in fines linked to a newer car with the same licence plate.

In the meantime, Telkom has responded to these allegations in an emailed statement to Fin24.

“Sipho Maseko received a summons to appear in court on 5 June 2015 on allegations related to a motor vehicle licence plate,” said Telkom spokesperson Jacqui O’Sullivan.

“The lack of clarity related to these allegations has been a frustration in resolving the issue. Having now received full discovery of the allegations Mr Maseko is now able to study the detail of the allegations and will respond accordingly.

“Mr Maseko vehemently denies any intention to defraud any person or organisation and the necessary representations will be made to progress this matter.

“Mr Maseko would like to address these claims and he now has the opportunity to do so, through the legal process,” said O’Sullivan.

Telkom further told Fin24 that the matter has been postponed until September 4 2015 for Maseko “to make the necessary representations”.
