Johannesburg - Internet video calling service Skype went offline on Monday across the globe.
Skype users, in various parts of the world, took to social networking platform Twitter to complain of problems with the service.
Microsoft-owned Skype has described the problem as a “presence” issue and explained that its online status technology has suffered a glitch, resulting in a range of knock-on effects for the service.
“We have detected an issue with the status settings of Skype,” said Skype in a blog post.
“Affected users will not be able to change their status, their contacts will all show as offline and they will be unable to start Skype calls to them.
“We're working on a fix for this issue and hope to have an update for you soon. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused while we get this resolved,” said Skype.
Last year, Skype reported it had 4.9 million daily active users.
In South Africa, Skype users have taken to Twitter to complain of the outage on Monday.
