Cape Town – The suspended boss for television channels at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has launched a bid to get his job back.
Leo Manne was suspended by the SABC on September 25 2014, pending an ongoing investigation.
But Manne has now taken the SABC to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in order to be reinstated.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago did not respond to a media enquiry regarding Manne's CCMA complaint.
The CCMA confirmed that Leonardo Moerane Manne has approached the commission regarding his suspension. Manne alleges that the SABC suspension process and investigation have been unfair and that he wants the broadcaster to reinstate him as general manager for TV channels.
According to the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) records, Manne was a director of Siyaya TV Consortium. Manne says he declared his business interests to the SABC in 2012.
According to the CIPC, Siyaya TV Consortium shares an address and auditors with Siyaya Free To Air TV, although it's two separate business ventures.
In 2014, Siyaya Free to Air TV, which received a pay-TV licence from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), secured exclusive radio and TV broadcasting rights to Bafana Bafana games in a six-year broadcast deal reportedly worth more than R1bn. This subsequently took these rights away from the SABC and SABC1.
