Johannesburg - Fake social media profiles are being used to lure unsuspecting job seekers into parting with their money, the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has warned.
Fraudsters are setting up false social media profiles in the name of senior TNPA representatives and attempting to extort money from job seekers, the authority has said.
Photographs of the Port Manager of Durban, Moshe Motlohi, have already been copied onto a fake Facebook account, from which promises of employment have been made, according to the TNPA.
The TNPA further said that some job seekers have already been duped into paying these fraudsters.
“TNPA categorically states that these employment offers have not been issued by the company and advises the public to refrain from responding to such offers or paying any money if requested,” the ports authority said in a statement.
“Transnet does not under any circumstances require payment from job applicants and only advertises vacancies via the official online career portal on its website or in national print media. All due diligence is followed by the company’s human resources department when positions are advertised,” added the authority.
Social media scams that promise jobs is not a new problem in South Africa.
Just this week, low-cost airline Mango said it is investigating a fake recruitment scam on social media.
And last month, health company Netcare also alerted the public of fake career and training opportunities being posted on social media.
