Millions spent to deliver free Wi-Fi for Tshwane

Pretoria - Around R150m has been invested in the programme to deliver free Wi-Fi to Tshwane, Gauteng premier David Makhura said on Monday.

The project would be undertaken in partnership with the private sector.

"To date R150m has been invested in this initiative," Makhura said in his state-of-the-province speech prepared for delivery in the legislature in Johannesburg.

Government also planned to build at least 160 000 houses for locals in Hammanskraal, Winterveldt, Sterkwater, Lady Selbourne, Soutpan phases one to seven, Lotus Gardens, Fortwest, Capital Park, Vermeulen, Olievenhoutbosch, Nellmapius, Zithobeni, Kirkney, and Danville.

A further R525m would be spent on establishing a business process outsourcing park in Hammanskraal.

"The park will offer on-site training, technical support and incubators for SMMEs (small, medium and micro-sized enterprises)," Makhura told MPLs.

The project was expected to create over a thousand jobs during construction and over a thousand indirect jobs.
