M4JAM offers cash for tech recycling

Cape Town - Micro-jobbing platform Money for Jam (M4JAM) has launched a tech recycling programme on its social network platform.

M4JAM has partnered with Green Office in a pilot project to recycle used toner cartridges.

The system, which is hosted on social network WeChat, posts jobs to the network's followers which can then elect to do them for a small fee.

M4JAM said that following its launch in August, it was overwhelmed with South Africans wanting to do jobs for cash. The platform works by breaking up large projects into smaller jobs which are then parcelled out to subscribers.

The recycling programme fulfils two functions: It removes the environmental hazard of waste and can be used by schools and organisations to conduct fundraising campaigns.

Expansion

"This recycling initiative can be used by schools and welfare organisations as ongoing fundraising initiatives - and by normal people who want to make some extra money," said M4JAM founder, Andre Hugo.

The toner recycling programme will roll out in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban initially, and jobbers will be paid R5 per cartridge.

Green Office, which will conduct the recycling of the material, will ask subscribers to estimate how many they can source and the drop-off days will be promoted in advance.

Should this programme prove successful, it could well be expanded to other recycling areas such as glass and even tyres.

"We are currently also in talks with a glass manufacturer, a tyre recycling organisation and a beverage company about similar recycling projects using the M4JAM platform. The concept can be extended to any recyclable, including plastic, cardboard, light bulbs, e-waste and paper," said Hugo.

The Green Office campaign begins on the 20 October.
