Here's what SA is buying online for Christmas

Cape Town - As the world races toward the shopping season, an online retailer has revealed the top gifts for 2014.

According to Takealot.com, multimedia toys will likely be found under the Christmas tree if you know a Santa with a fat wallet.

Online platforms continue to make gains as shoppers turn to mobile devices to make purchases.

The recent shopping bonanza Black Friday in the US saw mobile sales growing by 20.6% over 2013 figures, or 30.3% of all online sales, up from 22.5% last year.

Research firm eMarketer expects mobile commerce to grab around 1.2% of online sales this year in an online retailing market expected to grow to $304bn.

Naspers recently announced that kalahari.com will merge with takealot.com as a hedge against foreign e-commerce players.

"In a highly competitive market like SA, with still a low share of ecommerce as a percentage of total retail, we need to get more scale to build a healthy business, as both companies make substantial losses at the moment," Naspers CEO Bob van Dijk told Fin24 at the time.
