Gauteng Post Offices ‘remain open’ despite strike

Johannesburg - The South African Post Office (Sapo) said its Gauteng outlets remain open on Thursday morning despite a planned strike.

Up to 4 000 workers are set to march in Johannesburg’s city centre on Thursday to protest issues of alleged maladministration and salary payment problems at Sapo, said CWU’s provincial secretary Jabulani Mncube.

But on Wednesday, the Johannesburg Labour Court granted Sapo an urgent interdict to restrain the CWU from striking, marching or picketing at the Sapo’s work premises.

Despite the court ruling, Mncube said on Thursday morning that the union’s planned march is going ahead and will instead pass by Post Office buildings as workers head to the Public Protector’s offices and Gauteng legislature buildings to hand over a memorandum.

Sapo spokesperson Khulani Qoma told Fin24 that regardless of the CWU’s planned action on Thursday, Post Offices across Gauteng remain open.

“We actually haven’t seen an impact,” Qoma told Fin24 on Thursday morning.

“They are all open and it appears that operations are as normal as they were yesterday,” Qoma said.

Qoma added that striking workers could face disciplinary action or find themselves in contempt of court.

Mncube told Fin24 that “workers are on their way to the march”, which kicks off in Johannesburg’s central business district.

“We are expecting a huge turnout,” Mncube told Fin24 on Thursday morning.

“We are not going to the Post Offices; we’re going to go past them,” he said.
