App yourself a cup of coffee

Cape Town – A cutting-edge payment app was launched at Cape Town’s trendy Portside Vida e Caffé on Thursday, adding to a rapidly growing mobile payment sector in South Africa.

FlickPay has partnered with the coffee franchise to roll out its service across the country and is gearing itself up to launch at major retail chains soon.

“Flickpay is the only mobile payment app that is integrated into the point of sale, so that means that the cashier can actually get confirmation of the payment right there on the till,” said FlickPay MD Trent McLelland. “Our competing products send an SMS to a phone somewhere, which can cause a little chaos if it’s busy and it’s actually going to slow the whole process down.”

With SnapScan and Zapper already working their way through retail stores and restaurants in many cities, an addition to the sector is more welcome news to app-savvy retailers. “It’s great to be a part of the evolution of mobile payment,” said McLelland.

The integration means that both merchants and users benefit from a closed loop payment system. This encompasses loyalty rewards, geo-located coupon serving and relevant deal distribution, with intelligent split bill payments and a whole lot more on the development horizon.

Original QR codes are generated each time you’re about to pay for your morning coffee, halting online fraudsters. FlickPay encrypts your card details and stores them on your phone. At no point is your important card information stored or backed up on a server. Transactions go through the Pay U gateway, meaning there is no cost for the customer.

FlickPay is powered by wiGroup, a platform provider specialising in point-of-sale integrated mobile transacting, responsible for the mobile payment solutions and platforms for MTN, Shoprite Checkers, Pick n Pay, Engen, KFC, Vodacom and many more.

“FlickPay couldn’t be in a better space to fast track a cashless South African society,” said McLelland.

More to come

Vida e is in development stage with its own app, with the assistance of WiGroup and FlickPay, and will integrate its loyalty programme. “Our app will be launched in October and customers will be able to pay for their coffee without worrying about swiping their credit or loyalty card,” said Vida e marking manager Andrea Calitz. “I was looking for something that was simple to use and help give our customers a seamless payment process at the POS.”

Peter Miller, retail division head of wiGroup, said the group was at the forefront of creating platforms for retailers and companies. “We have been in existence since 2007 and the market is growing and adapting so quickly,” he said. “It really is exciting. We get to enjoy a lot of the activity being the platform in the middle.”

He said South Africa was ahead in developing mobile payment solutions in some regards. “We’re cutting edge, but we’ve got lots to learn when it comes to some of the customer apps.”
