Cape Town – Nasa has given a unique insight into the sun’s patterns and rotation with an online video.
The agency’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) published a YouTube video showing a time lapse view of how the sun changes over time.
The video was captured using the cameras on the SDO satellites which orbit the Earth at 3km/second or 11 000km/h.
Observation of the sun is key for astronomers who check the solar disc for flares which can impact technology on Earth.
“Scientists study these images to better understand the complex electromagnetic system causing the constant movement on the sun, which can ultimately have an effect closer to Earth, too," said Nasa.
"Flares and another type of solar explosion called coronal mass ejections can sometimes disrupt technology in space,” Nasa said.
