Cape Town - Once seen as a hub of industrial activity, the small town of Atlantis in the Western Cape is now home to very few businesses.
But one of those businesses is one of South Africa’s biggest TV and refrigerator manufacturers, Hisense, which is looking to expand operations with land reserved for expansion of its local plant.
The Chinese global giant remained mum on what production operations could be brought to the local facility. However, Hisense has seen a push into the TV, refrigerator and smartphone space.
The Hisense SA plant is one of five production facilities in China, Algeria, Egypt and Mexico and of its over 500 employees, 98% of them come from the Atlantis community - one of the areas in the Western Cape hardest hit by drugs and crime.
Hisense SA says its refrigeration market share in the country has doubled between 2012 to 2014. Hisense also claims to be the top seller for TVs and fridges in South Africa.
