Johannesburg - Hoverboards may the stuff of science fiction but car-maker Lexus is hinting that it’s actually developed such a gadget.
The car-maker is not revealing much about how the device works but it claims that it is real, and it has even released a short video clip that teases how the hoverboard works (see YouTube link below).
The car-maker is also calling its hover board the ‘SLIDE’.
“Through the combination of design, technology and imagination…SLIDE is a perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved,” reads a note on the Lexus website.
“The Lexus Hoverboard uses magnetic levitation to achieve amazing frictionless movement. Liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets combine to allow Lexus to create the impossible,” claims the car-maker.
The company is further promising to reveal more about the hoverboard over the coming days and weeks.
Lexus, though, is not be the only company that has sought to develop such technology.
California startup Arx Pax is building the Hendo Hoverboard which is expected to cost $10 000. The device uses magnetic technology and can only ride over copper and aluminium surfaces, limiting its range.
