Cape Town – Instant messaging application WhatsApp has updated its emojis after surpassing the one billion user mark.
The Facebook-owned platform has launched emojis that include new animals as well as expanding the number of characters where users can change the colour to match a racial preference.
WhatsApp has also updated its religious references with emojis that cover multiple groups as well as an expansion of the Chinese symbols.

The symbols have made their way into the common vernacular as people increasingly use the graphics to represent how they feel on a platform where visual cues are absent from communication.
Social networking giant Facebook recently bought WhatsApp for a record $19bn. The service hit one billion users this year, according to Facebook.
