Cape Town - South African talent was on display as local developers were recognised in the MTN App of the Year Awards.
The competition, now in its third year, rewards applications developed to cater to the South African smartphone market.
"The submissions were of exceptional quality making the competition intense. The independent panel of judges really had their work cut out for them in selecting the winners," said Kanagaratnam Lambotharan, MTN SA chief enterprise business officer.
App development in SA continues to grow as lower priced smartphones make internet access more affordable.
Local developers have seized on the opportunities to write programs applicable for the country.
"This shows that the mobile developer talent pool in South Africa is increasing every year and the country can compete with the best in the world," said Lambotharan.
The overall winner was LIVE Inspect created by Allan Cawood, Adrian De Vries and Nick Pistorius. The app speeds up the process of insurance inspections.
Here is a list of the category winners:
- Best iOS App (Consumer) - SuperSport
- Best iOS App (Enterprise) - SyncMobile
- Best Android App (Consumer) - My Belongings
- Best Android App (Enterprise) - LIVE Inspect
- Best App use of Microsoft Cloud Services - Vigo
- Best App for the Microsoft Platform - Zapper
- Best Garage Developer App - Rea Vaya
- Most Innovative App - Wildlife tracker
Lambotharan was bullish about the prospect for local developers to compete at the international level.
"The winners have really been a cut above the rest and have shown just what is possible using mobile apps."
