Cape Town - Social networking tools have been closely correlated with infidelity with more than half of cheaters using social platforms to contact lovers, a dating site has found.
Victoria Milan said that a study into the habits of people involved in discreet affairs found that 51% used WhatsApp, Facebook, or Twitter to contact their lovers.
Victoria Milan is a discreet social network that facilitates affairs and it conducted the survey among a pool of 12 500 people in the US and Europe.
The rise of instant message applications has reduced the cost of communication and users regularly exchange a number of messages per day on the platforms.
However, because of the social nature of networks, it becomes easier to conduct affairs.

The results show that beyond social networks, 15% of cheaters used SMS, 13.6% relied on phone calls, and 9.89% e-mail.
But it is unclear whether the social networks are responsible for the affairs, or whether it is simply a channel to contact lovers.
In the US recently, congressman Vance McAllister of Louisiana has been accused on infidelity after footage of him kissing a woman was leaked online.
It later emerged that the woman was a staffer in the conservative's office and her husband had contributed to McAllister's campaign.
In the 2012 US presidential race, Herman Cain withdrew his presidential charge when he was accused of sexual impropriety by several women.
In SA, President Jacob Zuma was charged with rape after sex with a 31-year-old family friend, but a court found that the sex was consensual.
Worryingly, Zuma admitted in court that he did not use a condom despite being aware that the woman was HIV-positive, resulting in media condemnation, particularly because he then headed the National Aids Council.
Victoria Milan said that when cheaters made contact via cellphone, they usually operated from an alternative number, unknown to their spouse or long-time partner.
"Everyone is using mobile technology to reach people close to them. Just remember to immediately erase all text messages that you send to or receive from lovers! It helps you to avoid getting caught," said Victoria Milan CEO Sigurd Vedal.
