Acer launches new everyman tablets

Cape Town - Acer has launched new tablets on Monday that cater to both Windows and Android fans as the company drives market share of its devices.

The tablets come in three flavours - Iconia Tab 8 W ("W" for Windows powered), Tab 10, and new Iconia One - with displays of 20cm (8 inch) for the Tab 8 and larger Iconia; 25cm (10.1 inch) for the Tab 10.

As a bonus, Acer has thrown in a one year subscription to Office 365 with the Iconia Tab 8 W which is powered by an Intel Atom quad core processor.

Battery life is claimed at 8 hours with normal use and the device has dual stereo speakers.

The Tab 10 runs Android 4.4 (KitKat) and follows similar design language to the baby brother.

As a differentiator, the Tab 10 has a micro HDMI port which allows you to display content on the screen directly on a flat panel TV.

The new larger Iconia repeats the Android theme and has been given a power boost with an Intel quad core processor and is available in a variety of colours: Jade Green, Sunshine Yellow, Vivid Orange, Sky Blue, Essential White, Midnight Black, Fragrant Pink, Violet Purple, Mia Blue and Garnet Red - seriously rainbow.

Pricing for South Africa is not clear but on the Acer website, the previous version of the Iconia has a retail price of $129.99. However, on Best Buy, the 64GB device retails for $249.99.

Though a retail price in SA of R1 300 for the 20cm device is unlikely, Acer believes that the tablets offer value for money.

The Iconia Tab 8 W could make a decent laptop replacement, but the keyboard is an optional extra.

The tablet market is under pressure and Acer has been a beneficiary as PCs make a comeback. Number from tracking organisation IDC on Monday found that Acer grew its PC market share by 15.1% as traditional PCs enjoy a spike in sales.

Price is also a key issue with a number of vendors targeting the sub-$100 tablet.

Lenovo has been racing to an increasing market share and through First National Bank, customers can pick up a Lenovo tablet for R99 over two years.

For comparison, Computer Mania sells the Mecer S7 tablet (17cm) for R899, the Asus Fonepad for R1 999, and the 25cm Prestigio for R2 899.
