REVIEWED: Alcatel OneTouch Go Play

Johannesburg - The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play screams out fun before you take it out of the box.

The device comes encased in what looks like a vanity bag, packed with all its contents neatly tucked into compartments - a box one would keep not just for the warranty.

The Go Play is an average sized smartphone featuring a rugged plastic body and textured back, which makes a statement about the device’s durability.

It is also IP67 certified which means that it is dust and water resistant.

The device further features a 5 inch display, 720 x 1280 pixel resolution and has 1.2 GHz processor running Android Lollipop.

The Go Play features a humble 8 megapixel camera, with an autofocus that looks like a loading circle when focusing.

The 5 megapixel facing camera captures decent selfies even in low-lit conditions.

The beauty of using the Go Play is that it offers the nostalgic feeling of a five-year-old device – where features were uncluttered simple and easier to navigate.

But the Go Play is not punching above its weight. It is simple, easy to use and somewhat user friendly.

To its disadvantage, no high-end smartphone user would go near the Go Play – not even as a secondary device.

Offering very low specifications, the Go Play is better suited to a first-time smartphone user who won't have high expectations from their device.

With that being said, even though it features an 8 megapixel camera - which was previously seen as 'bigger' camera among older smartphones - the quality of the images produced is for users who just really want to capture those light-hearted family moments.

The device comes preloaded with a range of social media apps and games, but it still manages to keep the menu simplified.

Gifting the Go Play for a grandparent would be a great idea, but those hip granddads with the tech know-how might not be too impressed.

With a price tag of under R 3 500, the Go Play is ideally a player among entry-level devices – but with more devices featuring high-end specifications at lower prices – the Go Play might not be the first choice in bang for your buck.
