Cape Town – Nokia (now Microsoft) smartphones have jumped to the top of the Orange Store sales chart.
The online platform announced late on Monday that the Lumia 640 XL LTE smartphone has taken the top slot in South African sales over the holiday period.
The Motorola Moto X Play came in second, followed by the Wileyfox Swift.
Online sales were healthy despite tough economic conditions and Sony, the previous leading brand, fell to eighth place on the Orange list.
“Sales over the 2015/2016 holiday period exceeded our expectations, despite the falling rand,” said Blake Levitan, Orange Horizons country manager for South Africa.

The Lumia 640 XL LTE is offered as dual SIM at R3 900, compared to Cell C which sells the device for R319 per month on an Epic 200 contract.
“Owing to the fact that our pricing remains live, the prices of imported items are affected by the exchange rate and fluctuations in the strength of the rand. However, given our competitive pricing on a wide range of smartphones, and the number of South African smartphone users rising steadily each year, we are not surprised that smartphones have once again dominated our online sales,” said Levitan.
