Hisense launches native Netflix TV app

Cape Town – Chinese electronics maker Hisense has moved quickly to capitilise on the launch of Netflix in SA.

The Chinese company announced that its new smart TVs will come equipped with a built-in Netflix application for people to take advantage of the streaming content provider.

Hisense said that South African Netflix subscribers simply log-in to the app and the TV will stream content via the internet.

“Another way to access Netflix is by pressing the “Home” button on the television remote control and then the right arrow to select ‘VOD’ on-screen. The Netflix icon is displayed on the VOD page, press ‘OK’ to access the app and sign in to the service,” a Hisense statement said.

However, there is a catch: The company recommends a minimum 5mbps speed to watch movies and TV shows in high definition.

If fibre broadband is not available in your neighbourhood, typical ADSL line rental from Telkom costs R1 104 for an 8mbps uncapped, all-inclusive service.

Hisense said that from this year, all smart TVs set for release will have the Netflix app built-in.
