Pietermaritzburg - This year we have seen the introduction of many cheaper devices punching above their weight to compete in the high-end bracket.

One such device is the Xiaomi Mi5, which was recently launched to the South African market.

Coming in at a retail cash price of R7 999, the Mi5 is almost unmatched for cost versus features, as the the phone is furnished with all the bells and whistles one would expect from a pricier device.

For starters, despite its price, the Mi 5 does not look or feel cheap. The Mi 5 is encased in a metal frame similar to devices like the Samsung S6 and iPhone 6, with a 3D glass body, available in white.

It features a full-HD 5,15 inch display with Gorilla Glass 4 for protection from scratches and abrasions with the back glass curved for a better grip in the palm of the hand.

The rear camera is 16 megapixels with phase detection autofocus, and 4-axis Optical Image Stabilisation for sharper images even with the user’s camera shake.

It is also able to capture video in 4K.

The Mi 5 captures some of the best selfies on any device with the a 4 megapixel camera on the front. While many devices on the market feature better facing cameras, the Mi 5’s selfie camera takes great pictures even with the beauty settings off, what’s more entertaining is that the camera uses face-detection technology to determine the gender and age of the person in sight of the camera — encouragement for the most obscure facial expressions to manipulate age!

Under the hood the device is fitted with a 1,8 GHz processor, one of the fastest on the market, with a 128-gigabyte version with 4 gigabytes of RAM and 32- and 64-gigabyte versions both with 3 gigabytes of RAM.

It’s also boxed with the Android Marshmallow operating system.

The Mi5 also has a 3 000 mAh battery which is optimised to last days on a single charge with minimal usage.

The fast-charging battery also allows the device to charge to 83% in just half an hour.

Adopting the early trend — which will soon become status quo for all smartphones — the Mi 5 features a Type-C reversible USB charging port to allow it to be plugged in any way without the hassle of turning the charger up-down and up again to fit it in!

And Xiaomi did not forget the fingerprint scanner for even easier unlocking of the device.

It is very difficult to shop for a device on the market with all the features the Mi 5 includes for the price the device is offered at.

What’s more, the Mi 5 will set a benchmark for the devices with its features at the price it is offered at.

While many are still sceptical about the brand, Xiaomi is quickly growing in Asian markets and as high-end devices maintain their steep prices, opting for a cheaper handset could soon be seen as better value for the early and late majority of the market.

Devices like the Mi 5 will be gamechangers in the smartphone market.
