Johannesburg - Chinese electronics maker Hisense has launched a mid-range smartphone and tablet range in South Africa as local competition in the market heats up.
Hisense - which is better known for its television sets and household appliances - has unveiled its metal Infinity H6 smartphone and its 6.35mm thin Sero 8 Pro tablets.
Both devices sport Google’s Android 4.4 operating system.
Specifications of the Infinity H6 include a 5 inch screen, Dolby Digital Sound, a Snapdragon quad-core 1.2 GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB ROM and dual-SIM functionality.
The Infinity H6 also retails at a suggested price of R3 499.

Meanwhile, the Sero 8 Pro tablet supports 4K video decoding and display, a Quad Core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB Memory and Wi-Fi capabilities.
Hisense has said that this device will be available in SA in March in grey, gold, red and silver at a suggested retail price of R2 999 at selected retailers.
“We’re pleased to offer products boasting the same technology as our competitors, yet at a more affordable price,” said Hisense General Manager, Youbo Li.

Growing competition
Choice in South Africa’s smartphone market is growing amid a flurry of low cost devices being launched in the country this year.
On Thursday, Vodacom announced that it plans to start selling its Android powered Smart 4 Turbo LTE smartphone at a price of R1 499 in SA.
And on Wednesday, Microsoft launched its Lumia 535 in South Africa - a dual-SIM Windows Phone device that costs R1 699 on prepaid and R149 per month on contract.
