OUTsurance CEO resigns to join wireless startup

Cape Town - The CEO of OUTsurance Willem Roos has resigned to take up a new position with wireless broadband provider Rain.

In an investment update to shareholders on Wednesday, Rand Merchant Investment Holdings said that Roos has resigned with effect from 31 December 2017.

“Willem is relocating his family to Stellenbosch and will be taking up an executive position with the 4G+ mobile start-up business, Rain,” it said.

“Willem remains committed to OUTsurance and will support the business through this transition. He will retain his shareholding in OUTsurance and remain on the board.”

When the rain comes

Rain, the startup that Roos is joining, currently offers LTE-Advanced broadband services with its market partner Internet Solutions.

In a media release in July, it said that it had already built 1 500 base stations and was on track to build 2 000 by the end of 2017.

It also plans to expand into the mobile arena. “We will soon be launching a full mobile service offering. We believe that in the foreseeable future all voice calls will be carried over data networks,” it states on its website.

While it has not announced a date for the start date of its mobile offering, MyBroadband reported that 'Rain Mobile' will be available as a beta trial before the end of the year.

In July, mining magnate Patrice Motsepe's African Rainbow Capital (ARC) aquired a 20 % stake in the Rain.

“There is great demand in our country for fast, reliable and affordable data coverage and Rain promises to deliver just that,” said Johan van Zyl, ARC co-CEO in a media release at the time.
