Cape Town - MTN has announced that former Microsoft SA executive Mteto Nyati has been appointed as group chief enterprise officer for the mobile operator.
This newly created role is intended to help MTN capitalise on integrating ICT into its enterprise offerings.
"Mteto will be a member of the Group EXCO, and take responsibility for leading the group-wide enterprise and ICT strategy, and to enhance MTN's position in the enterprise segment," said Sifiso Dabengwa, MTN group president and CEO.
The operator faces difficult times in SA. The regulator has announced new policy regarding a cut in MTR or mobile termination rates.
These are the rates that operators pay each for traffic on rival networks and makes up a significant portion of revenue.
MTN reported a 24.9% decline in South African revenue at the end of 2013 which it attributed to an MTR cut.
Also, while subscribers across the group increased by 9.8% to 207 million and revenue increased by 12% to R136.5bn, the company indicated that in SA, revenue and subscriber growth was below expectations.
MTN is also intent on expanding a fibre network which is aimed at business users first, followed by homes. However, this represents a costly investment and no final dates for rollout have been announced.
