Ramaphosa: The last few years were difficult, but we're dealing with it

President Cyril Ramaphosa has said that SA welcomes investors at the Mining Indaba with open arms and has emphasised that SA and Africa are destinations that can offer great value.

Ramaphosa was speaking during a brief appearance at an event hosted by ENSafrica on the sidelines of Mining Indaba 2019.

He said African leaders would be gathering in Addis Ababa in a few days to try and perfect the Africa free trade agreement signed in the past.

“SA has entered a new dawn. Africa is changing and transforming and repositioning ... as the fourth industrial revolution is upon us,” he said.

“The last few years have been difficult, but the new dawn means we are transforming and dealing with key challenges our country faces. We are on a transformation trajectory, dealing with many challenges, but doing the right things.”

Ramaphosa said many of these issues SA is now dealing with were raised by business people pointing out what was holding them back from investing in the country.

“We are now dealing with issues created from when there was policy uncertainty, policy inconsistency and policy deviation where we took wrong routes. We are now dealing with these issues with a great deal of determination,” said Ramaphosa.

“I am a peacemaker. We are listening to criticism since we are a listening government which wants to collaborate with our key stakeholders, namely business, labour and communities.”

He said Nelson Mandela left SA a legacy of working together even if it is to sit down with your enemy and find solutions.

“SA is a land of collaboration where we find peace even if we are diametrically opposed. The SA economy is now like a plane ready to fly and we are all involved in this joint effort,” he concluded.

“We want you to invest in SA and the rest of the continent. When you go home from the Mining Indaba, leave your dollars behind.”
