Cape Town – The South African mining industry should get “less stick” and “more carrot” from Mines Minister Mosebenzi Zwane, said Peter Leon, global co-chair of Herbert Smith Freehills.
Leon was speaking at a media conference ahead of the 2017 Mining Indaba, which starts on Monday and will extend until February 9.
“I want to say to Minister Zwane: Let’s have a fresh start. At the moment it’s all stick and no carrot for mining in South Africa. The Department of Mineral Resources makes more and more demands on the industry. Government is taking, but not giving,” Leon said.
