Cape Town - As hard-pressed consumers are girding their loins for yet another looming petrol price increase, many already struggling motorists are looking for ways to bring down travelling expenses.
Economists predict the high petrol price will have a huge impact on the entire value chain, with what has been described as a 'horrible' domino effect on every facet of South Africans’ lives.
Inflation is also expected to hit the 6% mark, or even rise to 6.5% or 7%. On top of that, municipal power hikes also usually come into effect in July, ensuring that consumers are quite literally in for a rough ride this month with little chance to stretch their income.
So what is a hapless motorist to do?
Enterprising Fin24 user John tells how he tackled a seemingly hopeless situation:
"I drive about 30km every day to work, and it was costing me about R400 per week."
John had all sorts of idea on how he could cut costs, mulling a move to public transport or buying a scooter.
He continues: "I opted for a scooter and bought myself a Vuka ML 150. My weekly costs were reduced to about R80.00."
In addition to saving a packet, John now also experiences other benefits: "It is a pleasure to ride the motorbike and I enjoy it."
